Installing Owncloud 9 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS


Owncloud is replacement for Dropbox and Google Drive like Cloud services. This is a program which will run on server and provide cloud experience to users. You can install it on your home server or cheap cloud servers from DigitalOcean. You can find more information about it here.

  • Install apache and mysql packagges.

      $ sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server
  • Add Owncloud Repositories

      $ curl | sudo apt-key add - 
      $ echo 'deb /' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/owncloud.list
      $ sudo apt-get update
  • Install Owncloud packages

      $ sudo apt-get install owncloud
  • Configure MySQL Database

      $ mysql -u root -p
      Enter password:
      mysql> CREATE DATABASE owncloud;
      Query OK, 1 row affected(0.00 sec)
      mysql> GRANT ALL ON owncloud.* to 'owncloud'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
      Query OK, 0 rows affected, 1 warning(0.10 sec)
      mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
      QUERY OK, 0 rows affected(0.00 sec)
  • Setup Owncloud

    • Open browser
    • Go to localhost/owncloud
    • Create admin accound
    • Scroll down and choose MySQL database
    • Enter Database information
    • Click Finish
